THE IRREGULAR  BLACK BROOK

SATURDAY 25th OCTOBER 2008

(A QUADRATHON EVENT)

BWF APPROVAL No. BWF 104/E2/08

A 22 mile challenge walk exploring the Black Brook Valley, a narrow, steep sided tributary of the river Calder which runs from Scammonden dam, north to the village of West Vale between Halifax and Elland.  This is a relatively unexplored area  of the country  regards challenge events.   The walk  begins at  the  community centre in the village of Sowood and comprises three loops of twelve, six and five miles.  The twelve mile route crosses fields and goes through the old part of the village of Stainland.  It then crosses the main valley and turns west going close to the villages of Barkisland and Krumlin, and reaches Scammonden Dam, where will be situated a check point and refreshment stop.  From here the route passes the small linear village of Pole Moor, and heads east along the ridge with the Colne Valley, crosses the head of Longwood valley a tributary of the river Colne, and skirts the village of Outlane.  It then returns to Sowood crossing the valley of the Holywell Brook, the main tributary valley of the Black Brook.  The five mile route is an inner loop of the twelve mile route, taking the south side of the valley, but with differing views from those of the longer route.  The shoulder of the other main tributary valley of the Black Brook, the Red Lane Dike is then followed south before the route returns in an easterly direction along the southern shelf of the main valley.  It then goes between the villages of Sowood and Outlane, and the head of the Holywell Brook, before returning to the finish.  The six mile route explores the lower part of the Holywell Brook passing through the hamlet of Jagger Green, and between the villages of Holywell Green and West Vale.  It then visits the lower section of the Black Brook, again passes through Stainland village passing the ancient stone cross, and returns to Sowood via the deer-park in the Holywell Brook valley.
